Aran Jumpers

The Aran Jumper (also known as a Fisherman’s Jumper) is a traditional icon of the Aran Islands and worldwide symbol of Irish-ness.

The original jumpers were hearty sweaters with cable knit patterns on the chest and sleeves. Most traditionally made in a cream colour, the un-scoured sheep’s wool was used to keep in its natural oils making these jumpers waterproof and perfect for the Irish Weather.

The patterns knitted into the jumpers can have many different meanings for example; a diamond pattern for wealth and success, a basket stitch for a fisherman’s plentiful catch, or a cable knit for safety and good luck while fishing. Families even had a unique pattern of their own.

Visiting Inis Mór is a great opportunity to take home your very own piece of the Aran Islands.
